JOB DESCRIPTION

The role of this Director is to partner with business and technology services leaders to lead and support the execution of the enterprise data strategy for the organization.  This will include working to build and support product teams focused on empowering our organization to make the best decisions possible by leveraging data.  We have dedicated teams focused solely on data analytics and data science across many critical areas, including sales, marketing, revenue mgmt., fleet operations, supply chain, pricing, workforce mgmt., e-commerce, customer service, performance & strategy, and more.

This role is dynamic, diverse, and challenging and this person will have responsibilities that cross multiple functions/areas and will wear multiple hats.  Their job will require skills and expertise to function as:

  • Product Manager
  • An Engineering/Technical Manager
  • Resource and Vendor Manager
  • Delivery Manager

This person should have a good understanding of business intelligence, data analytics and data science skills, techniques, approaches, and architecture.  This person should be able to leverage their knowledge, skills and experience as an analyst, manager, and leader, to help our organization find and retain talent, provide input on strategic priorities and direction, and ensure our teams love their work, are heavily engaged, and performing at an exceptional level to deliver on the outcomes each team has their focus on. 

This person will help the product teams understand, prioritize, and execute the work using our agile delivery operating model, including supporting the daily scrum, weekly sprint and quarterly timebox planning activities and actions. 

We are at the early stages of a multi-year Digital Transformation journey, where we are focusing on creating the best experience for our customers, no matter when they engage with us.  This journey also includes digitizing our operations, automating processes, and leveraging data analytics and data science to do things more efficiently and profitably. 

This person will get to support teams that will work with modern technology, in an environment that feels more like a start-up than a big fortune 500 company.  We have built a culture that fosters collaboration, empathy, diversity, and flexibility. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Interact directly with leaders and subject matter experts to understand and grow a strong working knowledge of our business, across all functions and domains (both broadly and deeply)
  • Work closely with executive stakeholders, engaging and communicating regularly to provide updates, mitigate risks and get feedback
  • Identify the roles and resources needed for the dedicated data analytics product teams and work in concert with business functional leaders to build, develop, coach, and support the teams to execute the work
  • Partner with and leverage vendors to provide key resources to our product teams; manage and cultivate those relationships and talent pipelines to ensure the right resource mix across teams
  • Provide input, support and guidance on analytics and data science to the teams as needed
  • Support, manage and promote the advancement of the technology stack for data analytics and data science, working closely with the Data Platform and Operations teams

WE’RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE THAT HAS:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a college/university in a computer/information science, statistics, operational research, or related field
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant work experience related to data – in a role as an analyst, data scientist, architect, or consultant
  • Considerable experience leading multi-site, global and/or offshore development teams
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams, supporting projects, managing budgets
  • Considerable experience working on large scale, enterprise-wide projects, or transformational programs
  • A detail-oriented mindset and way of working
  • Solid business communication skills
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • The confidence and skills to have a meaningful conversation with a C-level executive
  • The ability to potentially travel 1-2 times a year

SKILLS YOU SHOULD BRING TO THE TABLE:

  • Career experience and wisdom associated with running teams, hiring people, setting direction, coaching, and mentoring
  • Strong working skillset and experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Strong knowledge of data platforms, systems, databases, and the technology needed to do the job of the people on your teams
  • Knowledge/experience working with data lakes, data warehouses, data analytics, data science, BI and reporting tools
  • Strong working knowledge of agile frameworks, methodologies, and ways of working
  • Experience working as part of, or alongside product teams that executed in sprints using Scrum
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal, organization, and time management skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently in a fast-paced environment and act with a sense of urgency
  • Contribute positively to the organization, both individually and as part of a team
  • Ability to work well remotely and with use of tools like Zoom
  • Bonus points for experience/skills with:
    • SAFe:  Scaled Agile Framework
    • Collaboration tools including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, Jira, Miro
    • Being a Scrum Master or Scrum lead on a team
    • AWS cloud platform, design patterns, analytics tools, services, and products
    • BI or reporting tools including Tableau, Cognos, Power BI
    • Data engineering tools including Kafka, Airflow, Glue, Kinesis, Informatica
    • Programming languages/tools including Python, R, Scala, Lambda, Hadoop, Spark, Athena, Sagemaker
    • Conference speaking, book/article/blog publishing, industry recognition or achievements
