Job description

The Supervisor, Accounting is responsible for overseeing the preparation, analysis, and reporting of financial information for the Canadian operations. This role supervises day-to-day accounting activities, supports internal and external financial reporting requirements, and ensures compliance with applicable accounting standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements. The position provides leadership to the Accounting team while supporting operational efficiency, financial accuracy, and continuous process improvement.

This role partners closely with Finance leadership, internal stakeholders, auditors, and cross-functional teams to support monthly close activities, reporting obligations, reconciliations, and financial analysis.

Salary range: 85k - 100k

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and participate in the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules for internal and external reporting purposes.
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Review general ledger activity, account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and supporting documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist in the preparation and analysis of debt reporting schedules, financing-related reconciliations, and treasury reporting requirements.
  • Analyze and review foreign exchange transactions and the determination of foreign exchange gains and losses related to foreign denominated assets and liabilities.
  • Prepare, analyze, and reconcile monthly insurance-related accounting activities, including premium calculations, reinsurance reporting, and associated payments.
  • Support the preparation of annual financial statements, audit schedules, and regulatory filings, including assistance with SEC reporting requirements and other statutory reporting obligations as applicable.
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors by preparing audit schedules, responding to inquiries, and ensuring timely completion of audit requests.
  • Monitor compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, IFRS/GAAP requirements, and corporate financial procedures.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and enhanced reporting efficiencies within the Accounting function.
  • Provide financial analysis, reporting support, and ad hoc accounting assistance to senior management and business partners.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis activities as required.
  • Ensure confidentiality, integrity, and proper maintenance of financial records and documentation.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, coach, and develop Accounting team members to support departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Oversee onboarding and training of new employees to ensure adherence to company procedures, internal controls, and performance expectations.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance team environment focused on accountability and continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or related discipline required.
  • CPA designation (or actively pursuing CPA designation) preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience required.
  • Minimum 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience in financial reporting, month-end close, reconciliations, and audit support required.
  • Experience working within a large, multi-entity, or multinational organization considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and internal control practices.
  • Knowledge of IFRS and/or US GAAP reporting requirements.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial/accounting systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Hyperion, or similar ERP systems).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and team development capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Strong business acumen and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Understanding of AI technology as it relates to accounting processes.
